How to Choose the Right Handyman: 7 Questions to Ask Before You Hire

Hiring a handyman shouldn't feel like a gamble, but for a lot of homeowners, it does. You've probably heard the horror stories: the guy who takes the deposit and disappears, the one who does sloppy work and won't come back to fix it, or the "handyman" who turns out to have no license, no insurance, and no accountability.
I started [AHK Handyman](/about) because I knew homeowners deserved better. After 10 years in the trades, I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, and I want to help you avoid the ugly. Here are seven questions you should ask any handyman before you hire them, and what a good answer looks like.
1. Are You Licensed, Bonded, and Insured?
This is the most important question on this list. A license means the handyman has met the legal requirements to operate in your area. Bonding protects you financially if the contractor fails to complete the work. Insurance protects you from liability if someone gets hurt on your property.
What a good answer looks like: "Yes, we're fully licensed, bonded, and insured in the state of Colorado. Happy to provide proof."
Red flag: Hesitation, vague answers, or "I don't need one for this type of work." Walk away.
At AHK Handyman, we're fully licensed, bonded, and insured. It's non-negotiable for us, and it should be for you too.
2. Do You Offer a Warranty on Your Work?
A warranty tells you how confident a handyman is in their own craftsmanship. If they won't stand behind their work, why should you trust them with yours?
What a good answer looks like: "Yes, we offer a written warranty that covers both labor and parts."
Red flag: "We don't really do warranties" or "If something goes wrong, just call me." Verbal promises don't hold up.
We offer a 5-year labor and parts warranty on every single job. That's not industry standard, it's the AHK standard. I wrote a whole post about [why a 5-year warranty matters](/blog/why-5-year-warranty-matters) if you want to dig deeper.
3. Can You Provide References?
Any handyman who's been doing quality work should have happy customers willing to vouch for them. Don't just ask for references, actually call them. Ask about the quality of work, communication, timeliness, and whether they'd hire the handyman again.
What a good answer looks like: "Absolutely. Here are a few recent customers you can contact."
Red flag: "I don't really have references" or "Just check my reviews online" (and there are none).
At AHK, references are available upon request, and we're proud of every one of them.
4. How Do You Handle Pricing and Estimates?
Understanding how a handyman prices their work upfront prevents sticker shock later. Some charge hourly, some charge by the project, and some give vague quotes that balloon once the work starts.
What a good answer looks like: "We provide free, written estimates with a detailed breakdown of costs. No hidden fees."
Red flag: Verbal-only quotes, reluctance to put pricing in writing, or quotes that seem suspiciously low (they'll find a way to add charges later).
AHK Handyman provides free on-site estimates with clear, written quotes. What we quote is what you pay, period. Check our [FAQ page](/faq) for more details on our pricing and payment process.
5. What's Your Experience and Background?
The trades are skilled work. You want someone who's been doing this long enough to handle surprises, because there are always surprises, especially behind walls. Ask about their background, how long they've been in business, and what types of projects they specialize in.
What a good answer looks like: Specific details about their experience, specialties, and track record.
Red flag: Vague answers like "I've been doing this a while" or an inability to describe past projects.
I started in plumbing at 18, and over the past 10+ years I've built experience across electrical, framing, drywall, painting, flooring, and general contracting. Our remodel specialist Justin brings additional expertise in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. You can [learn more about our team](/about).
6. Do You Do the Work Yourself, or Do You Subcontract?
This matters more than most people realize. When a handyman subcontracts your job, you lose control over who's actually in your home, the quality of their work, and the accountability if something goes wrong.
What a good answer looks like: "Our own team handles the work. You'll know who's coming to your home."
Red flag: "I'll send my guys" without being able to tell you who those guys are, or heavy reliance on subcontractors for core services.
At AHK, our team does the work. You'll see the same familiar faces from start to finish, and that consistency shows in the quality.
7. What's Your Process from Start to Finish?
A professional handyman should be able to walk you through exactly what happens from your first phone call to the final walkthrough. Clear process = clear communication = fewer surprises.
What a good answer looks like: A step-by-step explanation covering consultation, quoting, scheduling, the work itself, and follow-up.
Red flag: No clear process, "We'll figure it out as we go," or difficulty explaining how things work.
Here's the AHK process: 1. You call, text, or fill out our online form. 2. We schedule a free on-site consultation. 3. We provide a detailed, written estimate. 4. You approve the quote, and we schedule the work. 5. We complete the project and do a final walkthrough. 6. Everything is backed by our 5-year warranty.
Simple, transparent, professional.
Bonus: Red Flags to Watch For
Even if you don't ask all seven questions, keep an eye out for these warning signs:
- No written contract or estimate. If it's not in writing, it doesn't exist.
- Demands full payment upfront. A deposit for materials is reasonable (we collect 50% on remodels). Full payment before work starts is a red flag.
- Poor communication. If they're hard to reach before you hire them, it only gets worse after.
- No online presence. In 2025, a legitimate business should have at least a website or social media presence.
- Pressures you to decide immediately. A trustworthy handyman gives you time to think.
The Bottom Line
Hiring the right handyman comes down to trust. You're letting someone into your home, and you deserve someone who's honest, reliable, skilled, and accountable. Ask these seven questions, watch for red flags, and trust your gut.
At AHK Handyman, we make this easy. Licensed, bonded, insured. 5-year warranty. Free estimates. References available. One team, one standard of quality. [Get your free estimate today](/contact), we'd love to earn your trust.
